Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. And thousands of gigatons of methane, equivalent to the total amount of coal in the world, lie deep within the oceans in the form of ice-like solids called methane hydrates. The big question is whether global warming — temperatures have risen about one degree Fahrenheit over the last 30 years — will thaw some of these methane hydrates. If so, the methane might be released as a gargantuan oceanic burp. Once in the atmosphere, that methane would accelerate the greenhouse effect and warm the earth and raise sea levels even more.
Why We Need to Worry About Global Warming Now Why the new urgency? Planetary changes which were supposed to occur toward the end of the century, according to scientific computer models, are actually happening today. Dr. Paul Epstein, a leading climate researcher at Harvard Medical School, citing the rapid intensification of storms around the world, said: "We are seeing [storm] impacts today that were previously projected to occur in 2080." The Point of No Return is Behind Us The world has already passed the point of no return for climate change, and civilisation as we know it is now unlikely to survive, according to James Lovelock, the scientist and green guru who conceived the idea of Gaia - the Earth which keeps itself fit for life. More Global Warming Approaching Point of No ReturnDr Rajendra Pachauri, the chairman of the official Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), told an international conference attended by 114 governments in Mauritius this month that he personally believes that the world has "already reached the level of dangerous concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere" and called for immediate and "very deep" cuts in the pollution if humanity is to "survive". Global Warming 30 Times Quicker Than It Used To Be Greenhouse gases are being released into the atmosphere 30 times faster than the time when the Earth experienced a previous episode of global warming.
A study comparing the rate at which carbon dioxide and methane are
being emitted now, compared to 55 million years ago when global
warming also occurred, has found dramatic differences in the speed
of release. More White House Keeps Lid On Climate Scientists Scientists doing climate research for the federal government say the Bush administration has made it hard for them to speak forthrightly to the public about global warming. The result, the researchers say, is a danger that Americans are not getting the full story on how the climate is changing. More
ABC News: Was Confusion Over Global Warming a Con Job?On March 26 ABC News aired two back-to-back segments on global warming. One addressed the question: “The vast majority of scientists have determined global warming to be a real threat. So why has it taken so long to convince Americans?” The story included interviews with Virginia state climatologist Pat Michaels, journalist Ross Gelbspan, and Rick Piltz of Climate Science Watch. The text of the story, “Was Confusion Over Global Warming a Con Job? Some Claim Disinformation Campaign Attempted to Create the Impression Scientists Were Broadly Divided,” was posted on the ABC World News Tonight Web site. How the White House Edits Out Global Warming"Decoder: See No Evil. How the Whitehouse Edits Out Global Warming" Sierra, January-February 2006. This article shows how Philip A. Cooney, chief of staff for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, edited two 2002 draft reports by the U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP).
